It’s An Epoxy Epiphany

It may not look like a lot of progress, but it’s been a hurry up and wait kind of week. Epoxy dries slooooowly! And I can’t make any dust while it dries. So I pour some epoxy, wait 36 hours, pour some more, wait 36 hours, etc. The One Ring that rules them all is mounted, as are the Dwarven coins. The waterfall is poured and the recess for the face is cut. As an added level of excitement, the humidity here soared to about 90%. You can see I have the clock clamped to my bench to keep it flat. By next week I hope to be well into the sanding phase. Here’s hoping.

Also, I want to give Chris at Second Chance Hardwoods a shout out. He is open enough to sell me 2 slabs of wood to make the base out of. Hopefully that will be taking shape by next week’s update as well.

A Little Preview

As promised, here is a preview of a new kind of clock. This is my first themed clock. The Lord of the Rings theme clock has The One Ring, a volcano, waterfall, some Dwarven coins and the base will hold a map of middle earth. The clock face is also kind of neat, but I don’t want to give everything away.

Started a New Product Line

I just started a new live edge grandfather clock – with a twist. This one is a theme clock. I chose a Lord of the Rings theme because the slab fits that. There are a few things I have to work out, like how to make a knot hole look like a volcano, but it will be an interesting clock when it’s done. I came up with a really cool design for the base, but I’ve got a few challenges getting parts while everything is closed and I am in quarantine. So far, I have managed to find everything but the wood for the base. I’ll post a picture when there is something to see.

As Promised

Here is a photo of the blanket box. A friend also pointed out it would make a nice tack trunk. She’s right. I could easily add a sliding, removable tray and a lock. There are more pictures on the gallery tab. This one is made out of Cherry with Ebony accent plugs, although it could be made out of just about any species of wood.

It’s been a while

It’s been a while since the show. I learned a lot and got lots of requests for new products. Since I am currently at home riding out the quarantine, I have had plenty of time to work on stuff. I am currently working on a Greene & Greene inspired blanket box. I showed it to someone who thought it would make a nice tack trunk. It would. I will post photos when it’s done. I am also going to launch a line of themed clocks. First up will be a “Lord of the Rings” themed clock. More to come on that.

Getting Set for the Show

The Rhode Island Fine Furnishings Show is November 8-10 at the WaterFire Arts Center in Providence. I finished Harvey Wall Hanger. I’ve got business cards, rack cards, a banner and a way to take credit cards. I have a booth set up in my dining room, a pile of moving blankets, furniture dollies and a truck rented. Most important, I’ve finished all the clocks and candle holders. By the way, I have moved to booth number 32.

Harvey Wall Hanger

Thought I would try something different. I saw this little spalted Maple slab and thought it would make a nice wall hanging clock. This is still a work in progress, but I like how it is coming along.

It’s starting to look like a clock

OK, so I skipped a few steps. I intended to post each step as I completed this clock. But I got lost in the work and just finished it. I love this clock. The spalted Sycamore with the American Sycamore base turned out beautiful. There are more pictures, including close ups of the spalting, on the ‘memorial clocks’ page. Enjoy!
